The Bundesliga Explained
History, format, champions, and what makes the league unique
What is the Bundesliga?
The Bundesliga is Germany's top-tier professional football league and one of the highest-revenue, best-attended football leagues in the world. It was founded on July 28, 1962 at the DFB Congress in Dortmund and kicked off on August 24, 1963 with 16 teams. Today, 18 teams compete across a full season (August to May) with home-and-away rounds — 306 matches per season.
League Format
18 teams play each other twice (home and away = 34 matchdays). Three points for a win, one for a draw. The bottom two are automatically relegated to the 2. Bundesliga. The 16th-placed team plays a two-legged playoff against the third-placed team from the 2. Liga. The champion and top finishers qualify for UEFA Champions League, Europa League, or Conference League.
